Java Default Parameters?

Java Constructor Overload vs. Default Parameters? Elegant solution or design smell? Unlock the mystery behind this curious Java code snippet.

Does Java support default parameter values like C++ (e.g., `bool param3=false`)? Why might the shown two-constructor Java approach be preferred over a single constructor with defaults?

Solution in a Nutshell

No, Java doesn't directly support default parameter values like Python or JavaScript. However, you can achieve similar functionality using method overloading or optional arguments via wrapper classes.

Method Overloading:

Define multiple methods with the same name but different parameter lists.

public class MyClass {
    public void myMethod(int x, int y) {
        // ...
    }

    public void myMethod(int x) {
        myMethod(x, 10); // Default y = 10
    }
}

Optional Arguments (Wrapper Class):

Create a wrapper class containing optional parameters.

public class MyParams {
    public int x;
    public int y;

    public MyParams(int x) {
        this(x, 10);
    }

    public MyParams(int x, int y) {
        this.x = x;
        this.y = y;
    }
}

public class MyClass {
    public void myMethod(MyParams params) {
        // ... use params.x and params.y
    }
}

Spring Boot (Optional Arguments):

Spring supports this well via its dependency injection mechanism using @Value or constructor injection with optional parameters.

@Component
public class MyClass {
    private final int y;

    public MyClass(@Value("${my.param:10}") int y) { // Default 10 if not set
        this.y = y;
    }
    //...
}

Choose the approach best suited to your needs. Overloading is simpler for few optional parameters, while wrapper classes provide better structure for multiple options. Spring Boot offers a concise way to manage defaults at configuration time. Remember to handle null values appropriately.
