Array to ArrayList

Array to ArrayList? Think you know the answer? This Java conversion hides a subtle gotcha. Challenge accepted?

How can I convert a Java `Element[]` array to an `ArrayList`?

Solution in a Nutshell

Creating an ArrayList from an Array in Java (Spring Boot compatible)

Several methods efficiently convert Java arrays to ArrayLists. The most straightforward uses Arrays.asList():

import java.util.ArrayList;
import java.util.Arrays;
import java.util.List;

public class ArrayToList {
    public static void main(String[] args) {
        String[] arr = {"apple", "banana", "cherry"};
        List<String> list = new ArrayList<>(Arrays.asList(arr));
        System.out.println(list); // Output: [apple, banana, cherry]
    }
}

Arrays.asList() creates a fixed-size list backed by the array. For mutable lists, wrap it in an ArrayList constructor as shown.

Alternatively, use a loop for more control (especially for primitive types):

int[] intArray = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5};
List<Integer> intList = new ArrayList<>();
for (int num : intArray) {
    intList.add(num);
}
System.out.println(intList); // Output: [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

This method is beneficial when needing to perform transformations during the conversion. Choose the method best suited for your needs; Arrays.asList() is generally faster and more concise for simple conversions. Both approaches work seamlessly within Spring Boot applications.
