What are daemon threads in Java?

Solution in a Nutshell

Daemon Threads in Java: A Concise Guide for Spring Boot Developers

In Java, a daemon thread is a background thread that doesn't prevent the JVM from exiting. Unlike user threads, when all non-daemon threads terminate, the JVM shuts down automatically, regardless of whether daemon threads are still running. This is crucial for managing background tasks in Spring Boot applications.

Key Differences:

| Feature | User Thread | Daemon Thread | |---------------|-------------|---------------| | JVM Exit | Prevents exit if still running | JVM exits when all non-daemon threads finish | | Purpose | Core application logic | Background tasks (e.g., logging, monitoring) | | setDaemon(true) | Not applicable | Required to make a thread a daemon |

Example (Spring Boot):

import java.util.concurrent.Executors;
import java.util.concurrent.ScheduledExecutorService;
import java.util.concurrent.TimeUnit;

@Component
public class MyDaemonService {

    @PostConstruct
    public void startBackgroundTask() {
        ScheduledExecutorService scheduler = Executors.newScheduledThreadPool(1);
        Thread daemonThread = new Thread(() -> {
            while (true) {
                // Perform background task
                System.out.println("Daemon thread running...");
                try {
                    Thread.sleep(5000); //sleep for 5 seconds
                } catch (InterruptedException e) {
                    Thread.currentThread().interrupt();
                }
            }
        });
        daemonThread.setDaemon(true); // Mark as daemon
        scheduler.scheduleAtFixedRate(daemonThread::run, 0, 5, TimeUnit.SECONDS);
    }
}

This Spring Boot component uses a ScheduledExecutorService to run a daemon thread periodically. The setDaemon(true) call ensures the JVM will exit gracefully even if this task is still running when the application shuts down. Remember to handle potential interruptions gracefully. Avoid long-running critical operations within daemon threads.
