Postman POST Request with Path Variable

POST request with path variables? `@PathVariable` in a `@PostMapping`… Think you've got it? Think again. Uncover the unexpected behavior.

How do I send a path variable in a POST request's body using Postman? My endpoint uses `@PathVariable` in a Spring `@PostMapping`.

Solution in a Nutshell

Sending Path Variables in POST Requests with Spring Boot & Postman

Spring Boot's @PostMapping handles path variables differently than GET requests. To send a path variable in a POST request using Postman, include it in the request URL, not the request body.

Example:

Assume your Spring Boot controller has this endpoint:

@RestController
public class MyController {
    @PostMapping("/users/{userId}/orders")
    public ResponseEntity<String> createOrder(@PathVariable Long userId, @RequestBody Order order) {
        // ... your logic ...
        return ResponseEntity.ok("Order created for user " + userId);
    }
}

Postman Setup:

  1. URL: http://localhost:8080/users/{userId}/orders (Replace {userId} with the actual ID). Postman will automatically treat {userId} as a path variable.

  2. Method: POST

  3. Body: Use raw and JSON (application/json) to send your Order object as JSON:

{
  "orderDetails": "Some order details"
}

Key Points:

  • Path variables are part of the URL's path segment.
  • Request body is for data relevant to the resource being created/updated.
  • Ensure your Postman request's content-type matches your Spring Boot controller's @RequestBody annotation.

This approach correctly integrates path variables with POST requests in Spring Boot, ensuring seamless data handling. Remember to replace placeholders like http://localhost:8080 and Long userId with your actual values.
