Postman POST Request with Path Variable

POST requests, path variables, and Spring Boot: Can you send a path variable *within* a POST request's body? Find the elegant solution.

How do I send a path variable in a POST request using Postman? My Spring Boot controller uses `@PathVariable` in a `@PostMapping`.

Solution in a Nutshell

Sending Path Variables in POST Requests with Postman (Spring Boot)

Spring Boot REST controllers often use @PathVariable to extract values from the URI. Postman, however, doesn't directly map path variables to the request body in POST requests. Instead, you include them in the request URL itself.

Example:

Let's say you have this Spring Boot controller:

@RestController
@RequestMapping("/users")
public class UserController {

    @PostMapping("/{userId}/orders")
    public ResponseEntity<String> createOrder(@PathVariable Long userId, @RequestBody Order order) {
        // ... your logic ...
        return ResponseEntity.ok("Order created for user " + userId);
    }
}

Postman Setup:

  1. Request URL: Construct the URL correctly. Instead of http://localhost:8080/users/orders, use http://localhost:8080/users/{userId}/orders, replacing {userId} with the actual user ID (e.g., http://localhost:8080/users/123/orders).

  2. HTTP Method: Select POST.

  3. Body: Use the raw tab and JSON (or your chosen format) to send the Order object data. Example:

{
  "orderDetails": "Example order details"
}

Key Points:

  • Path variables are part of the URL, not the request body.
  • Postman's URL input field handles path variable substitution.
  • Ensure your request body matches your controller's @RequestBody parameter type.

This approach ensures correct mapping of both path variables and request body data in your Spring Boot application. Remember to adjust the URL and body based on your specific controller and data structure.
