How can I easily stringify a Throwable's stack trace?

Solution in a Nutshell

Converting Java Stack Traces to Strings in Spring Boot

Java's Throwable class provides the printStackTrace() method. However, for logging and error reporting, a string representation is often needed. Here's how to efficiently convert a stack trace to a String in Java, especially within a Spring Boot application:

Method 1: Using StringWriter

This approach is efficient and avoids potential OutOfMemoryError exceptions from very large stack traces:

import java.io.StringWriter;
import java.io.PrintWriter;

public String stackTraceToString(Throwable e) {
    StringWriter sw = new StringWriter();
    PrintWriter pw = new PrintWriter(sw);
    e.printStackTrace(pw);
    return sw.toString();
}

Method 2: Using Arrays.toString() (for simpler exceptions)

If you only need a concise representation of a simple exception (not a full stack trace), Arrays.toString() can be used to get the message and cause:

import java.util.Arrays;

public String simpleExceptionToString(Throwable e) {
    return Arrays.toString(new Object[] {e.getMessage(), e.getCause()});
}

Spring Boot Integration:

Integrate this within your Spring Boot application's error handling (e.g., using @ControllerAdvice or within your service layers) to log stack traces effectively. For example:

@ControllerAdvice
public class GlobalExceptionHandler {

    @ExceptionHandler(Exception.class)
    public ResponseEntity<String> handleException(Exception ex) {
        String stackTrace = stackTraceToString(ex); //Use Method 1 for complete trace
        log.error("Exception occurred: {}", stackTrace); //Log using your logger (e.g., SLF4j)
        return ResponseEntity.status(HttpStatus.INTERNAL_SERVER_ERROR).body("An error occurred.");
    }
}

Remember to replace "stackTraceToString(ex)" with "simpleExceptionToString(ex)" if using method 2, and adjust error handling as needed. Always log sensitive information responsibly.
